Lyricist Simon Wright said:
Quite a dark lyric. I'm not sure what harms have been done to the woman who features in it but I had in mind that she has become traumatised to such an extent that she has stopped speaking, and is now locked in her own world.
The guy who is singing loved her when they were much younger, and still loves her now.
Broken Flowers
(Intro)
All the scars that you carry
Are like babies in a morgue
Hard to look at
But beautiful in their own way
Hauntingly sad
(Verse 1)
I don't know what wrongs were done
For you to lock yourself away
I wish that you would talk to me
I wish you could say
(Chorus)
But you just sit arranging broken flowers in a vase
You sit there for hours If you could you would for days
Yet I remember when we picked fresh petals in the fields
Watched butterflies flutter by in the summer breeze
(Verse 2)
I hear your husband's gone
He found some blonde to trim his wick
And all your friends deserted you
When you became sick
(Chorus)
Now you just sit arranging broken flowers in a vase
You sit there for hours If you could you would for days
But I remember when we picked fresh petals in the fields
Watched butterflies flutter by in the summer breeze
(Bridge)
I know the doctor says you don't feel pain as others do
But when I gaze into your eyes it's there devouring you
And my doctor says I've little time left and it's true
I'm just another broken flower come to gently wilt with you
(Verse 3)
I'll leave this candle on
I know you like the light it casts
But all I see are those cardinals
Flitting over garden paths
(Outro)
Broken flowers
Broken flowers
Forget-me-nots and rose buds
Reposing in our final hours
