This song was inspired by reading the incredibly moving story about an underground cave diving trip in Norway that went horribly wrong with two Finnish divers losing their lives. Their surviving friends decided to venture back to retrieve their bodies, despite considerable risk to their own safety. If you have a few minutes to spare, you should read the attached story as it's very interesting and moving, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-36097300
Breathe Deep
(Intro ? whispered)
For lost friends
(Verse 1)
Underwater caverns
That have never seen the light,
Water cold enough to chill our bones
Everything the colour of night.
(Verse 2)
Diving into darkness
Silence ringing in our ears,
Return to oblivion
Steely eyes will shed no tears.
(Chorus)
Til the work is done
There's no pleasure in this dive,
Obligation rendered
From the dead to those still alive.
Love tangles us
Ensnares our heart,
Breathe deep, I?m down far
Wish I could return us to the start.
(Verse 3)
Bodies now suspended
In a state of disbelief,
Friends with whom we shared jokes
Now objects to retrieve.
(Verse 4)
Cold water stings my eyes
I?m drowning in memories,
It's the water stinging my eyes,
Not that I'm lost in reveries.
(Chorus)
Til the work is done
There's no pleasure in this dive,
Obligation rendered
From the dead to those still alive.
Love tangles us
Ensnares our heart,
Breathe deep, I?m down far
Wish I could return us to the start.
(Bridge)
Just enough air to return to my life
To walk through the door and kiss my wife,
Til another day
Til another time,
Remembering the darkness
But also the light that shines
The light that shines.
