Artist's Notes

I wrote this song to bring awareness to a very disturbing issue.  A statistic I heard recently stated that, on average, 22 veterans commit suicide every day. That is not acceptable.  We, collectively, as a society, should be doing more for the individuals who gave so much of themselves to protect what most of us take for granted.

Take the time....look them in the eye.

Lyrics

Old eyes staring out the window

lost in a world within his mind.

No one comes to see him anymore

They're all too busy and can't find the time.

His memories of today are lost forever

He's still fighting in that war from '42

He still hears the final screams from his fallen buddies

but no one hears him screaming from his room.

Empty eyes that never seem to focus

Blinded by the lithium and rage.

He sleeps under the bridge or in an ally

He's a hero from a long ago age

He's trying really hard to forget

the war that took his leg in '69

And the welcome home that wasn't very welcome

And the government that left them all behind.

chorus:

What would you say to those ghosts from yesterday

if you had the chance to look them in the eye?

would you stop to contemplate where you might be today

if they never gone to do what they have done?

Has this thought ever once crossed your mind?

Would you take the time?

Verse:

Lonely eyes staring at the bottle

and the loaded .45 in his hand.

the memories are just too hard to handle

and nobody seems to understand.

He's trying really hard to get over

the war that took his soul in 2010

and the wife and son that he lost

when he came home a shell of a man.

chorus:

What would you say to those ghosts from yesterday

if you had the chance to look them in the eye?

would you stop to contemplate where you might be today

if they never gone to do what they have done?

Has this thought ever once crossed your mind?

Would you take the time?

to look them in the eye?
