Artist's Notes

Continuing our latest project loosely titled "As Grim(m) As It Gets".
These set out to be adding some twists to the already twisted tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Lyrics

The Juniper Tree.   Lyrics by Elizabeth Auzan

My mother, bless her pious soul,
Died when I was one day old
My father, he soon married again
His new wife gave me only pain

My stepmother killed me, my father ate me
Cannibalism in the first degree

Juniper tree, juniper tree
Beneath your roots my mother sleeps
My bones lie beside her. My half-sister weeps
The Evil One that did this deed
Sowed hellish seed and such shall reap
Revenge will come and will be sweet

My half sister was kind to me
Did her best to soothe my grief
Into my life brought a little light
To make up for her mother's spite

Her mother liked to give her treats
Juicy apples, red and sweet
Said tell your brother that after school
An apple from the chest may choose

My stepmother killed me, my father ate me
Cannibalism in the first degree

I did as my stepmother bid
Lifted the heavy apple chest lid
As I bent over, she let it fall
Severed my neck, off my head rolled

She took a heavy butcher's knife
Hacked my body into dice
Cooked the pieces in a steaming stew
Evil incarnate, hellish brew

My stepmother killed me, my father ate me
Cannibalism in the first degree

My father with great appetite
Polished off the stew ev'ry mite
His wife told him I had gone away
With a distant uncle for to stay

But like the phoenix I revived
As a small bird came back to life
For her crime the Evil One atoned
Crushed to pulp by a huge millstone

My stepmother killed me, my father ate me
Cannibalism in the first degree

Juniper tree, juniper tree
Beneath your roots my mother sleeps
My bones lie beside her. My half-sister weeps
The Evil One that did this deed
Sowed hellish seed and such has reaped
Revenge has come so bittersweet
