Artist's Notes

Another in a series of new tellings of tales from the Greek Myths.

This one tells the tale of Philemon and Baucis.

Lyrics

Theoxenia or Their Goose Was Almost Cooked

Two ancient trees, their trunks entwined
Leaves whispering words gentle and kind
The beautiful metamorphosis
Of old Philemon and Baucis

Mi casa es su casa
Welcome, traveller, to my home
The universal unwritten law
Hospitality for those who roam
From that simple act of kindness,
Hospitality has become big business

Appearances, they say, deceive
Especially in Ancient Greece.
Where the Gods were fond of playing jokes
On unsuspecting mortal folks

Disguised as paupers, Zeus and Hermes
Visited Philemon and Baucis
The old couple opened wide their door
Then offered the food they had in store

Mi casa es su casa
Welcome, traveller, to my home
The universal unwritten law
Hospitality for those who roam
From that simple act of kindness
Hospitality is now big business

The cup of wine that Baucis poured
Refilled as of its own accord
Thus, the Gods made themselves manifest
The mortals trembled before their guests.

We have not honoured you, great Zeus
I shall kill and prepare our goose
I'm a dead duck, the goose did think
But Zeus saved him with a kindly wink

Mi casa es su casa
Welcome, traveller, to my home
The universal unwritten law
Hospitality for those who roam
From that simple act of kindness
Hospitality is now big business

Philemon and Baucis, Zeus declared
You have offered unselfish care
Your wicked neighbours all refused
All shall perish save you and your goose

The village was destroyed by flood
The wicked drowned and gone for good
But Philemon and Baucis stayed
Temple guardians to their dying day

Mi casa es su casa
Welcome, traveller, to my home
The universal unwritten law
Hospitality for those who roam
From that simple act of kindness
Hospitality is now big business
