Artist's Notes

Simon (Wright) said:
Before the Covid pandemic hit, I had a holiday in a small coastal village called Seahouses, which is in Northumberland, in England. While there, I learned about the story of Grace Darling. She was a lighthouse keeper?s daughter who rose to fame, in 1838, after she helped save people who had been on board a stricken steam ship called the SS Forfarshire which  foundered on rocks off the coast of Northumberland. She became not only a local heroine, but someone who was famed across the land, but her story had a tragic end.
I decided to have a go at telling part of her story as lyrics. Think it could work as a folk song.

James says:
This is my patch. I live about an hour's drive from the scene of this drama so have been aware of the story my whole life. It's an honour to get such good lyrics to work with.

Lyrics

Grace Darling   (Written by Simon Wright.   March 2021)

On the Fifth of September in Eighteen Thirty Eight

Sixty souls cast off from Hull unaware of their fate

With two masts and a steam funnel the Forfarshire set sail

Bound for Dundee harbour, but straight into a gale

As the drink smashed into her, the boilers sprung a leak

All mending efforts foundered, her condition turning bleak

By the time daybreak was risen, her engines had failed

A makeshift sail was rigged and the flooded water bailed

When the world is its darkest

When the future looks grave

When you look to the heavens

All you hope for is some grace

On the Sixth of September in Eighteen Thirty Eight

Sixty souls prayed for safe waters before it was too late

Make for the Inner Farne Bay was then the Captain's hope

But the rain lashed down relentlessly on his stricken boat

When the world is its darkest

When the future looks grave

When you look to the heavens

All you hope for is some grace

Grace Darling, from her father's lighthouse

Saw a ship'd crashed upon the rocks

Spied survivors clinging for dear life

Convinced her father to help.

They launched a Coble row boat

Though the storm blew hard,

Rowed to Big Harcour's jagged ledges

Picked the remaining survivors up

When the world is its darkest

When the future looks grave

When you look to the heavens

All you hope for is some grace

Grace Darling

Grace Darling

There were nine lives saved that day, five of them were crew

John, John, John, John, and John, then four passengers too

Grace became a heroine, famous across the land

Only to die of TB, holding her daddy?s hand

When the world is its darkest

When the future looks grave

When you look to the heavens

All you hope for is some grace

Grace Darling
